Perhaps one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen, Zardoz has certainly weirded, entertained, and intrigued its way into my heart. It’s not that I think that it deserves to be hailed as a critically acclaimed masterpiece, but it does tickle me in ways that only a few movies have before. I watched this movie for the first time as a joke with a few of my friends after seeing an image of Sean Connery dressed more sexily than any man should be.
What was at first a joke turned into (at least for me) quite the memorable movie experience. Yeah, the themes are extremely high brow, and the movie certainly makes an attempt at a sort of “high art” (it’s questionable if it achieves this or not), but honestly, this movie is both quite entertaining and intriguing. Even if you don’t enjoy the philosophical explorations on the ideas of mortality, God, and human progress, you might enjoy the ridiculousness, the unintentional hilarity, and Sean Connery’s utter hairiness. Regardless of your motivations, I highly recommend you see this movie. It will be quite the experience.
